An Additional Icebreaker in the Gulf of Finland

On 15 February 2011, the tug Zeus, hired from Alfons Hakans, began working in the Gulf of Finland in addition to the icebreaker Tarmo currently performing icebreaking operations, as the ice conditions in the Gulf of Finland have become more difficult.

The question of chartering a more powerful vessel to perform icebreaking activities in the Gulf of Finland is high on the list of priorities of the Estonian Maritime Administration. The situation is made extremely complicated by the fact that suitable vessels are not available on the market – in summer last year the MA announced a public procurement to charter backup icebreakers, but no tenders were submitted.
