Icebreaking Season Opened on 18 January

In the sub-zero weather of the previous week formation of ice in Pärnu Bay intensified and the ice sheet now extends up to 7-8 miles from the shore. The Maritime Administration’s multi-purpose vessel EVA-316 arrived in the area on 18 January to offer icebreaking assistance to ships.

As of 28 January 2018, all ships entering or leaving the Port of Pärnu and assisted by an icebreaker are required to have ice class 1C (Lloyd’s Register) or an equivalent ice class given by other classification societies, and to have engine power of at least 1600 kW. Tugs and barges will not receive icebreaker assistance.

The exact location of the EVA-316 can be viewed on the website www.marinetraffic.com.
