Maritime Directors Meeting in Tallinn on 4 October

On Wednesday, 4 October, the meeting of heads of maritime administrations of EU countries on “Developments in Maritime Transport Policy, Safety and Environment” took place in Tallinn, organised by the Estonian Maritime Administration and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in cooperation with the European Commission. As a rule, the biannual meetings take place in Brussels, but Estonia’s suggestion to hold it in Tallinn during the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union gave us the opportunity to introduce to the maritime administrations of EU member states the priorities and developments in the Estonian maritime industry.

In addition to the maritime directors of the EU, also representatives from the EMSA and colleagues from Norway and Iceland were present at the meeting. The Estonian delegation was headed by Mr Rene Arikas, Director General of the Estonian Maritime Administration, and included also Mr Eero Naaber, Head of Development Department and Mr Tarmo Ots, Head of External Affairs.

The participants discussed the ongoing initiatives in the digitalization of the industry, such as the EU Maritime Single Window environment and eManifest, integration of maritime transport into an overall transport digital strategy, and new technologies regarding autonomous ships and online ship and crew certificates.

At the meeting, the importance of having a flexible and fast legislative process in the EU as well as international level in the field of autonomous shipping was emphasised.
