New Requirements for Ships in Gulf of Riga and Pärnu Bay

On 09 February 2010, the Director General of the Estonian Maritime Administration issued a Directive on the basis of subsection 45 (51) of the Maritime Safety Act and Regulation No. 265 of the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications of 23 December 2003 “Procedure for Ice-Breaking Activities”, establishing new requirements for ships in the Gulf of Riga and the Bay of Pärnu due to continuing low temperatures, the thickening of ice up to 50 cm, and rafting and hummocking.

As of 14 February 2010, 00:00 hrs, all ships in need of icebreaker assistance when visiting the port of Pärnu are required to have engine power no less than 2000 kW and ice class 1B (Lloyd’s Register) or an equivalent ice class given by other classification societies.
