New Traffic Restrictions in Pärnu Bay and Gulf of Riga

On the basis of subsection 45 (51) of the Maritime Safety Act, and of Regulation No. 265 of the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications of 23 December 2003 “Procedure for Icebreaking Activities”, and due to the fact that ice conditions in Pärnu Bay and the Gulf of Riga are becoming more severe since the temperatures in the area continue to drop, the Director General of the Estonian Maritime Administration has issued a directive, according to which all ships entering or leaving the Port of Pärnu and assisted by an ice-breaker are required to have ice class 1B (Lloyd’s Register) or an equivalent ice class given by other classification societies, and to have engine power at least 2000 kW.

The new restrictions come into force on 11 February 2013, at 00:00 hrs.

This information will be published in Notices to Mariners and on the MA website, as well as transmitted via NAVTEX.
