Traffic Restrictions In Force

Starting today, 6 February 2012, all ships entering and leaving the port of Pärnu and needing icebreaker assistance are required to have ice class 1C (Lloyd’s Register), or an equivalent ice class given by other classification societies, and main engine output at least 1600 kW.

The MA multi-purpose icebreaker EVA-316 is servicing vessels in the Gulf of Riga and Pärnu Bay. Since the beginning of this winter navigation season, the EVA-316 has assisted 13 ships.
Currently, ice thickness between the Port of Pärnu and the islet of Sorgu is 30 cm, and in the region between Sorgu and the island of Kihnu there is ridged ice and hummocked ice in some places. Ice cover extends 5-10 NM west of Kihnu, but between the edge of the ice sheet and the island of Kihnu the thickness of ice does not exceed 10 cm. All vessels require icebreaker assistance in the area where ridged and hummocked ice can be found.
