Vessel Traffic Suspended in Areas Where Ice Roads Are Planned

As of 26 February 2018, 00:00 hrs, vessel traffic is temporarily not allowed in the Väinameri area north of the Virtsu-Kuivastu fairway, south of the Rohuküla-Heltermaa fairway, east of the Sõru-Triigi fairway, and west of the Munalaid-Kihnu fairway in the sea area in Kihnu Väin. The Estonian Maritime Administration took the decision on 23 February, in order to prepare public ice roads there to connect the mainland and the islands.

The Road Administration submitted an application to close vessel traffic in the region because favourable weather conditions enable the preparation of ice roads between the mainland and the islands of Kihnu, Muhu and Hiiumaa, and between the islands Hiiumaa and Saaremaa.

Vessel traffic has already been suspended to prepare an ice road between the mainland and Vormsi Island, but the ice road is not open yet. At the moment, only the Haapsalu-Noarootsi ice road is open to the public. On internal water bodies, the Laaksaare-Piirissaare ice road is open on Lake Peipsi.
